The three ways electricians quote
- Per point: one switch, socket, light or fan outlet is a point. New wiring for a house is usually quoted per point, labour only or with material
- Per day (dihari): for fault-finding, small repairs and jobs with no clear scope
- Lump sum: a full house, a shop fit-out or a DB and meter job, after a site visit
Ask which one you are getting. A per-point quote that includes wire and a per-point quote for labour only can differ by three times and both be fair.
What a point includes, and what it does not
A point normally covers the pipe or channel, the wire run to the DB, the box and the labour to fit the switch or socket. The switch itself, the socket, the fan hook, the light fitting and the DB breakers are usually material you buy or the electrician buys on your account. Concealed wiring in a new build is cheaper per point than opening plaster in an old house.
Material decisions that change the price
- Wire brand and gauge: Pakistan Cables, GM, Fast or Newage versus unbranded; 3/29 for lights, 7/29 for sockets, thicker for ACs and water motors
- Copper versus copper-clad aluminium: the cheap wire is the one that heats and burns
- Switch and socket brand: Clipsal and Schneider at the top, local brands below
- Breakers: a proper DB with an earth leakage (RCD) breaker costs more and saves lives
- Earthing: a real earth pit, not a wire tied to a water pipe
Fault-finding is a separate job
When a breaker trips, a fan runs slow or a room has no power, the electrician is not doing a "point"; they are tracing. That is priced by the visit or the hour, and a good electrician tells you the likely cause before touching anything. Never accept a quote to "rewire the whole room" without first hearing what the actual fault is.
How to compare quotes in your city
Post the job on Mechanics4U with the number of points or rooms, whether it is new or old wiring, concealed or open, and whether you will supply material. Electricians in your city send their price; ask each for per-point, material list with brands, and whether the DB and earthing are included. Choose one, and the agreed price is the final price. If a fault returns within 48 hours, they come back free.
Common questions
What is the electrician rate per point in Karachi?
It varies by electrician, by concealed versus open wiring, and by whether material is included. Post the job and compare three per-point quotes for your exact house.
Should I buy the wire myself?
You can. Ask the electrician for a written list of gauges and quantities and buy a known brand. Many prefer to supply it themselves; ask for the brand either way.
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
Overload, a short in a wire or appliance, or an earth leakage. It needs tracing, not a bigger breaker.
Is there a call-out charge?
Many electricians include a visit charge for fault-finding; ask before they come.
