What a per-kW price is made of
- Panels: the largest share. Brand (Longi, Jinko, JA, Canadian, Trina), wattage per panel, and whether they are A-grade or "second-hand new"
- Inverter: on-grid (cheapest, no backup), hybrid (works with batteries, backup during load-shedding), or off-grid
- Structure: standard iron frame on a flat roof, or an elevated structure that lets you use the roof beneath and catches more wind
- Wiring, DC and AC breakers, surge protection and earthing: the cheapest place to cut corners and the most dangerous
- Labour and commissioning, including the app setup for monitoring
- Net metering paperwork and the bidirectional meter, if you want to sell units back
Why 2026 prices move month to month
Panel prices follow the international module price and the rupee-dollar rate; inverter prices follow the same plus import duty. Installers buy stock in dollars and quote in rupees, so a quote from March is not valid in July. Always ask how long a quote is valid and whether the price is fixed once you pay the advance.
Sizing: the mistake most families make
Most homes are sized on the last three bills, which is right, but they forget what they will add: a new inverter AC, an electric car in two years, or a water motor moving to solar. Oversizing a little is cheap at installation time and expensive later. Also count the roof: a 5 kW system with 580 W panels needs roughly nine panels and their spacing; a shaded roof needs a redesign, not a discount.
Net metering changes the payback
With net metering your daytime surplus goes to the grid and offsets units you draw at night. The policy, the tariff paid for exported units and the approval time change with government decisions, so ask the installer what the current rule is in your DISCO (K-Electric, LESCO, IESCO and so on) and whether they handle the application. Without net metering, a battery-backed hybrid system makes more sense than a large on-grid one.
How to compare three quotes on Mechanics4U
Post the job with your last bill's units, your roof size and direction, whether you want night backup, and your city. Registered installers reply with their own price. Ask each for the same breakdown: panel brand and wattage, inverter brand and model, structure type, cable brand, warranty in writing for panels, inverter and workmanship, and who applies for net metering. Then compare per kW of the same specification. The cheapest quote with a different inverter is not the cheapest quote.
Common questions
What is the price of a 5 kW solar system in Pakistan in 2026?
It changes with panel and dollar prices monthly and with the components chosen. Post the job on Mechanics4U to get three current quotes for your city and roof, then compare them per kW at the same specification.
Hybrid or on-grid?
On-grid is cheaper and has no backup; hybrid adds batteries and covers load-shedding. Areas with long outages usually go hybrid.
How long does installation take?
A typical home system is installed in one to three days. Net metering approval takes longer and depends on your DISCO.
Do panels need cleaning?
Yes, dust and bird droppings cut output noticeably. Monthly rinsing in dry cities, and a professional clean once or twice a year.
